Independent game studio

We make games that don't take themselves too seriously.

ZOFL Studios is a small independent studio based in Massachusetts. We build quirky, action driven real-time strategy games for desktop. The daft bits are deliberate. So is the competition, and so is the quiet ambition of building something timeless, still playable twenty years from now.

The ambition

Timeless games, still playable twenty years from now

The competitive games that last are not the ones with the biggest launch. They are the ones with enough depth that players keep finding new things in them long after the studio has stopped explaining how they work. That is the kind of game we are trying to make, and it is the standard we hold every decision to.

It shapes what we build. Systems that reward mastery rather than memorisation. Balance we are willing to keep tending for years. Ranked play, replays and spectating treated as foundations rather than extras, because a game that people want to compete in needs somewhere for that competition to live.

Daft on top, ruthless underneath

Our games are allowed to be funny. Ridiculous units, undignified defeats, the occasional thing that should probably not be in a war. None of that stops them being games you play to win, and the two sit together better than people expect.

Underneath the silliness they move at a considered pace. Not frantic, and never idle. There is room to think, room to set something up, and room to watch it fall apart when your opponent reads you correctly.

The thing we care about most is that small decisions carry real weight. Where you put a single scout, when you commit your reserve, whether you spend now or hold for one more minute. Those choices should be able to swing an entire battle, and in our games they do.

Losing should make you laugh at least as often as it makes you swear.

Gameplay over graphics

A game is judged on how it plays, not on how many pixels it pushes. We spend our effort where it changes the match, and we would rather run smoothly on your machine than look slightly nicer on a trailer.

Built to last

Depth that keeps giving, balance we intend to tend for years, and a competitive scene with somewhere to grow into.

Decisions over reflexes

Reading your opponent should beat out-clicking them. We tune for judgement, timing and commitment rather than raw speed.

Desktop first

We build for a proper desktop client, with the screen space, the controls and the performance that a real strategy game needs.

Passion Projects

What we are building

We keep the slate short and work on things we actually want to play.

Island of Kings logo

Island of Kings Coming soon

A battle royale of crowned rivals fighting over a single island. Every player turns up wearing a crown, and the island will only ever have one king. Silly on the surface, genuinely tactical underneath. In early development for desktop, with no release date announced.
